World Trade Center beams displayed in Winslow
WINSLOW, Ariz. - Nearly nine years after the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001, two twisted and massive 14- and 15-foot-tall steel beams stand in silent testimony to the horror that New York City and the rest of America suffered. Winslow is unique in its possession of such large artifacts from 9-11, because only small pieces were given out to other communities after the larger beams were trucked off-site.

A Winslow institution - Ernie Seto's Public Market
WINSLOW, Ariz. - In 1973, Ernie Seto came to Winslow and located his grocery store named Public Market on Second Street, across from what's now the La Posada Hotel. Seto and his wife Helen created the store.

Final gathering of PT's Route 66 Rally
On Aug. 28, the conclusion of the First Annual PT's motorcycle rally was commemorated with a photo shoot in downtown Winslow on the "Route 66" shield at the intersection of Second Street and Kinsley Avenue. There were at least 40 motorcycles present.

Winslow Summer Nights ends with grand finale
Singing popular show songs from 7-9 p.m. on Aug. 27 were Kelci White and Rodney Dean. Their performance was a fitting end to 2010's Winslow Summer Nights. White and Dean are accomplished singers, dancers and actors, having performed various musicals.

PT's Rockin Route 66 Motorcycle Rally
WINSLOW, Ariz. - The first annual PT's Motorcycle Rally was held in Winslow during the weekend of Aug. 27-28. There was plenty of music, a bike contest, a bike show and barbecue lunch and dinner. The events were held at PT's Bar located at 1500 E. Third St. Other events included a motorcycle parade through downtown Winslow and cruises to the Painted Desert and other local sites.

WINSLOW, Ariz. - Rotary International District Governor Glenn Smith made his official club assembly visit to the Rotary Club of Winslow last Wednesday. Smith spoke of Rotary International President Ray Klingensmith, whose theme for the entire Rotary world this year is "Building Communities-Bridging Continents."

This popular watering hole is surrounded by stunning rock walls to the west and green marshes to the east. The reservoir holds abundant water year-round and invites boaters to explore the magnificent canyon winding west.

Ice Age man, animals in Arizona
A lecture by archaeologist Miles Gilbert was held last Thursday evening in the historic Winslow Hubbell Trading Post. His one-hour lecture and slide show described Ice Age man and animals in Arizona. He also brought animal skull fossils. According to Gilbert, man was hunting in Arizona about 10,000 to 20,000 years ago when the climate was different.

Winslow-Lindbergh Airport restored
WINSLOW, Ariz. - The current operator of the Winslow airport is Wiseman Aviation based in Flagstaff. As the co-owner and CEO, Orville Wiseman has restored the terminal to pristine condition. In fact, it probably looks better than it did over 80 years ago. Wiseman even went so far as to reconstruct the low stucco wall beyond the veranda.

In Winslow's restored Hubble building on the evening of Aug. 8, antique quilts were displayed and interpreted by Lenna De Marco and Anne Hodgkins. They are nationally recognized quilt historians from the Phoenix area.

The evening of Friday, Aug. 6 brought another evening of entertainment, all part of the "Winslow Summer Nights" series of concerts in downtown Winslow. Lahry Sibley provided two hours of country and gospel music with his dynamic singing.

A informal meet and greet was held in the historic La Posada Hotel Ballroom on Saturday, Aug. 7. to honor and introduce local, county and state wide Democrats. Registration to support candidates was available and short talks by candidates and current public officials was held after 6:30 p.m.

A Winslow institution: Joe's Glass and Lock
WINSLOW, Ariz. - Joe Chacon retired five years ago, but his old shop - now owned by Joe's son Mike, and his wife Elana - still retains his name. Located at 624 West Second Street, Joe's Glass and Lock does automotive glass, plate/plexi-glass, keys, locks, screens and mirrors. Beginning in 1976, Joe began his full-time business as Joe's Glass and Lock and worked until his retirement in 2005.

At Winslow Rotary's last July meeting, Jim Ferguson led a planning session, shaping a number of projects for this fiscal year. Some of the ideas discussed were 1) A much expanded Fourth of July celebration to include kids events, marching bands and barbeque; 2) An East End Route 66, 9-11 Memorial Park; 3) Continuing fund raisers for Winslow scholarships.

Beautifully bizarre vehicles
Winslow resident Rodney Rucker brought out several unique vehicles to display on July 30 for "Winslow's Summer Nights" on Kinsley Avenue. Among them was a motorized stagecoach, a 16-foot tall motorized shopping cart able to carry eight people and last, but not least was the Monster Car, a huge yellow coupe that fit no category at all.

The Democrat Party office is open in Winslow full time as of June 21 and will close after the November election. They are located at 206 E. Second St. across from the west end of La Posada property. You may pick up candidate information, register to vote, obtain yard signs and candidate lists, buttons and bumper stickers from them.

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The free entertainment in Winslow last Friday night was the Hays Sisters singing their inspiring gospel style, in perfect pitch as usual. They were unable to bring their Four Styles Band due to a medical problem with the drummer, but their unaccompanied singing was inspiring just the same.

Assistant District Governor (ADG.), Fred Carpenter, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Winslow this week. The ADG. addressed the club, which meets every Wednesday at noon in the Casa Blanca Restaurant, by saying jovially, "I'm from the District, and I'm here to help."

Originally located on west Old Route 66, the Moore brothers - Sid and Kevin - opened a chainsaw repair shop in Sid's garage.

Second Annual Winslow Duck Race a success
WINSLOW, Ariz. - On Saturday July 17, a number of "ducks" were positioned for the second annual Winslow Duck Race held at Clear Creek at McHood Park. The plastic ducks were about three inches long, colored pink, yellow and blue. Each duck was numbered and the cost to buy a "duck" was $5. The "race" was put on by Winslow Soroptimists and Winslow Rotary.

A new store called "Akoshiilaa Sheila" opened July 10 at 116 E. Second St .in Winslow. The owner-artists are Sheila and Gregory Long. All of their creations are made from natural materials. Sheila does beautiful bead work, contemporary wedding veils and Navajo shawls.
